The organic garden at Adare Guesthouse

The garden · Three decades organic

AsmallpieceofgreenGalway.

Behind the house: raised beds, a glasshouse, a quiet patio. We grow tomatoes for half the year and have done for thirty.

Beginnings

Two acres,
by Galway Bay,
long ago.

The garden began on a different patch - a two-acre stretch by the bay, where seaweed went into the soil and chemicals stayed out of it. Those habits travelled with us when we moved into the house. They’re visible behind it now: raised beds, a glasshouse warm in winter, and a patio for sitting still.

A closed loop

“Food waste feeds the digester, mixed with sawdust from the winter woodturning. The compost goes back into the beds, and so the year goes round.”

Pick a sprig of lavender on the way to your room.
